Watch out for the 2014 Producer Prices

It’s that time of the year when your market of choice will publish monthly producer prices to better facilitate the buying of local produce. Also referred to as buying price, producer prices are widely met with anticipation and suspense as such the need to publish them on a monthly basis from April to September each harvest year. Producer prices are set such that they are at par with prevailing market prices for crops in the region since local produce competes with imports at the market.
In order to facilitate the parity of producer prices, a regional price discovery mechanism which is called the South African Futures Exchange (SAFEX) is put in place as a benchmark. What needs to be understood is that these producer prices are not guaranteed to change from April to September as sometimes they may remain constant due to the absence of influencing factors.
